Because we are only just getting our first portal ready for release, I have stuck with DNN version 4.4.1.

What is involved with upgrading to 4.5.0, will my purchased modules still work, are there canges to
make, etc? I am hesitant to make an upgrade until I have the site released ad running for a while.

Perhaps I should upgrade locally at home first and test the issues out. I would still like to know
whether the database structure is different and what to expect though. The pro's and con's :)

Is version 4.5.0 an early release, major upgrade or reliable improvment from version 4.4.1?

  • First check with the developers/vendors of your 3rd party modules for compatibility issues with never versions, there might be an upgrade necessary
  • Before upgrading your DotNetNuke portal, is is always a good idea, to do a test upgrade of a local backup first (and never forget to backup database and installation directory!)
  • To perform the upgrade, you can follow these ugpgrades: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/186/Default.aspx
  • during the upgrade, the database structure gets modified automatically
  • regarding the new versions, you will find a detailed changelog at http://support.dotnetnuke.com/project/ChangeLog.aspx?PROJID=2.
  • If upgrading to DNN 4.5, I suggest to wait a few more days, until Version 4.5.4 is publically available, that shall be the most stable 4.5.x version.

I would agree with the above, I also have a tutorial on my site www.mitchelsellers.com that includes a full tutorial on how to upgrade to the newest version.

I agree with Leopuld on waiting for 4.5.4

4.4.1 is a very good version of DNN, though, so if that's what you've got now, you're doing pretty good already.  Don't be too worried about upgrading to the latest/greatest, although 4.5.3 is an excellent release.

Still, waiting for 4.5.4 might not be a bad idea!
