System:

XP home edition, ASP.NET 2.0, SQL Server studio express and Visual web developer express.

I've followed the quick installation instruction.

  • Created new website in developer - Worked ok
  • Pressed ctrl + F5 - worked ok
  • This opened an ie window and displayed installation options - worked ok
  • selected auto install and proceeded - worked ok

When the report started everything was successful until near the end then the following appears:

Executing Additional Scripts:
Creating Portal: My Website
Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Portal failed to install:Error!
Installing Optional Resources:

Installation Complete

When I click on the link to open my site it obviously doen't work

Anyone got any suggestions

Thanks.

I've gotten this error before as well. I don't know why the scripts are running successfully then fail to build the default portal. It doesn't seem to happen often and my solution was to delete everything and reinstall. You can also try initiating the install scripts via your bowser first instead of ctrl+F5 and then use your VWD for modifications later.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful,

Mike

had the same problem, found the solution in another post: length of file path! DNN can not work with long file path's.
