I have a clean install of DNN.  I have my DNS setup correctly to resolve the ip address to the site name I have chosen.  www.mysitesnamehere.com  Unfortunately I cant seem to figure out how to get the site to open unless I type in the address of www.mysitesnamehere.com/dotnetnuke  I have added portal aliases for it to pickup www.mysitesnamehere.com.  Any suggestions on how to get the site to resolve to www.mysitesnamehere.com rather than www.mysitesnamehere.com/dotnetnuke

Sounds like you installed into the DotNetNuke virtual directory.  You have a couple of options.

1. Put a page in the site root that will redirect to the DotNetNuke directory. Or,

2. Move the install into the root of the site.  If you used the install package this should be as easy as copying everything in the DotNetNuke directory to the root whilst maintaining the directory structure.  e.g. somesite\dotnetnuke\admin becomes somesite\admin.

I am having the same problem, and I haven’t been able to fix it following these two steps. Or maybe I should say I haven’t been able to follow these two steps. I am very new to this.

My provider says he’s not allowed to advise on this type of problem. So…

In my FTP folder there was a DNN folder along with two other folders and two other files, (one an under construction file that would come up before I made the index file), and a “gdform-asp” file. Then I created a simple index page with Front Page. When I search for my site I get the index page, not my DNN pages. I had planned to move the home page of DNN to the main access area of the FTP folder and rename it, and hope that would fulfill the step #2 solution. But I can’t even find my DNN home page.

My only experience with web building is comparing it to my two current websites that I maintain with Front Page. On my computer, in FP I have the index file/page, and each page is it’s own file and can be updated that way. But I can’t find the two DNN pages I built so far; Home and Free Pick.

Can someone give me a basic step by step fix for this?

Thanks for your help.

Jim

1. Basically, when you unzip DNN install file into a some folder, this folder has to become your running folder. This means that whatever url you are trying to use with dnn has to be set to point to that folder.

2. To test that, create a file called test.htm and put just one line in there  "Hello, World". Put it inside that root folder (you will see files like, Default.aspx, SiteMap.aspx, Web.config, folders admin, DesktopModules, etc in there). From your browser navigate to http://www.yourdomainname.com/test.htm and you shoudl see "Hello, World". If you see anything else, you've got some problem. Tell your host about it and see what they will say.

3. If you DO see that "Hello, World" message, that means that your domain name resolves correctly to the correct folder and at this point you just gotta make sure your DNN is set up properly (.NET 2.0, connection string to database, etc.)

Thanks for responding.

1)      I never unzipped a DNN folder. Through my host provider, I just clicked install, and a few minutes later it was installed, and looked like this.

DotNetNuke 4.5.1

DotNetNuke is an open-source Web Application Framework ideal for creating and deploying projects such as commercial websites, corporate intranets and extranets, online publishing portals, and custom vertical applications.

I clicked on the Admin URL and from there I was able to log in and make changes to the web. I never had to “point” any URL to a folder.

2)      I first tried to create a page in my FTP Folder, but when you click –file-new- the only “new” thing you can create is a folder. I went back to Front Page and in a blank web I created a test page; “test.htm”. I did a copy/paste into the access_db folder (which was empty) it added an .url at the end of the filename “test.htm.url” When I tried to access it, I got an error. I put it in the FTP folder and tried to bring it up in my browser, and I got this;

[InternetShortcut] URL=file:///C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/My Webs/mywebjts/test.htm

The file name from the Front Page file I originally made it in. So I guess it didn’t work, but I have a feeling I’m doing something wrong here. It just can’t be this complicated.
