Classic..     instead of giving a status..  you spend 10 minutes writing the same old stuff (or was it copy and paste?)

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1477/Default.aspx

Where exactly is the 'release target' within that blog post?

Is this the 'release target':  "The final release date has not been announced pending the results of testing by the benefactors and core team." ..    that is kinda general...

"These are not exact dates but they do give you the opportunity to plan for the next release." ..   where is the general date ..  I'd think 25 days of testing would be sufficient..  or at least sufficient for another status update.

Hi,

Let me preframe by stating that I am happy and loyal dnn user. :-) I value and admire the work by all who contribute to this fatastic project.

I Always find reading these and others forums interesting from the point of communication and how it occurs. Besides being a professional developer I also work in peak performance. Having made many mistakes myself in the past I am very aware that you "can not not communicate".

So I'd like to share a perspective if I may. Let me use a parallel analogy for an example.

Let’s say that DNN was an airline.  It offers first class seats (at a benefactor premium) and free seats to all other passengers.

Now and again the flight gets delayed due to bad weather, technical issues or some other unforeseen phenomenon.

Some clients may be just taking the one flight, some maybe taking the flight as a connection for another flight and some are flying for the first time and are feeling a little unsure or anxious.

Could you imagine how the passengers would feel if they didn't know what time their estimated departure was at? What if they had to make alternative arrangements elsewhere? Certainty is a fundamental need that we wish to satisfy.

For those of you who fly, you know how useful it is to be kept up to date with regular communication from an airline representative on the status of the departure when it’s delayed. The airline doesn't choose to not communicate with you if you are an economy passenger.  There would be out right war and bad publicity if this kind of discrimination was to occur.

They communicate with "all" classes of passenger. Why? Because it reduces any instance of unrest and disharmony.  It also shows that the airline is doing its best; in general passengers relax and await the departure.

There is usually a central point of communication. Either the details are listed on the departure board or there is a desk to go to ask questions. No matter which the airline does its best to keep the passengers informed.

How would you feel if the airline rep said to you: "Sorry we can’t tell you because we are focused on loading the baggage onto the plane or fuelling or running safety checks. It will be ready when it’s ready, now go sit down and wait"?

In the airline business they have to make sure everything is in place, technical and safety checks are conducted etc before they give the go ahead.  There is still an estimated time of departure and this is displayed for all to see.

Information is information and is easy to deliver. The challenge is with how we create it, prioritise it and deliver it.

The "It will be ready when its ready" actually translates as "I don't have a clue myself, I'm not going to let you know that I don't know, so go away and don't be annoying me!"

In regard to this community I see that there are many options for communication and it’s up to all of use to close the gap where it might be missing.

Some options include:

1). Do nothing at all and continue with the way information is delivered.

2). Create a release thread under general announcements for delivery date specifics. No need for detailed info. Just "ETD" or "Delayed until". It only takes a few seconds to post or update.

3). Create a module post in the right hand pane on the downloads page titled i.e. "Release Roadmap" with just a ETD Date or Delayed date etc.

I'm sure there are other ways to if we "work together".

In summary if takes less effort to inform than it does to continually responding to threads that ask the same question. If you tell me that something like this can't be done, then your not the right person to be talking to.

All comments welcome. Especially those that focus on solutions and strategies for all of us to succeed!

Colin

Brian.  Instead of posting one more whining comment how bout going and actually reading everything I posted in the thread.  I  had already posted the very status information you were seeking (7/18/2007 7:08:11 AM "We anticipate that the final public release will occur by early next week.").  There was no reason to make that statement a second time.  In the blog post I said we would announce a release when we had sufficiently completed testing to the point where we actually had a release date.  We have done that.

We have also posted numerous times that the policy is to give benefactors at least 2 weeks to perform testing of their products against a release.  This is a minimum amount of testing we do for each release unless it is an emergency patch.  We do not put a hard and fast cap on the total amount of time a release will take because it changes from release to release depending on the scope of changes and the bugs found during testing.  So in this case we expected at least two week test cycle.  That changed because of the RC2 and then changed again because of RC3.

Colin,

We are working on making this information publicly available.  Utlimately, the core will go through a release process just like module currently do.  But like the module release process, it will be a while until we have the process fully in place and ready to open up for public viewing.  Similarly, we currently capture some beta testing data which we use to determine the need for subsequent RCs.  Our current level is nowhere near what we want it to be nor is it yet at a level where we wish to open it up since it would just create more questions than it would answer.  As we get our release process more formalized then you will see this information presented in a much more centralized and organized fashion.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for giving some information on the timline.

I'd like to share with you how in my environment I would use the following sample formula for communicating that information:

Development Estimated Delivery Date (DEDD) + 7 days (relief period for unforseen tasks) = Public Estimated Delivery Date (PEDD).

This way we can cover as much as possible, close out and have a little breating space.  I believe in "Under Promising and over delivering". In this case if the DEDD release is available before PEDD then its a bonus and it certainly makes one look good as you delivered before the public date.

The opinion that I'm hoping to communicate is that the CT doesn't need to be communicating from a place of "reaction", yet with a little flexibility can rise above the standards predefined by the industry and create new higher standards. (Refering to your post above).

Lets say you walk the same way to work everyday. One day they are doing road works and the road is blocked. Becase you have no reference for an alternatve route you panic and blame everything except yourself for the inconvience.

If you had of taken different routes to work in the past you wouldn't be in reation and you would be on your way to work, and more than likely on time. Flexibilty is the key!

You and the rest of the Core Team are responsible for an amazing viral community. Respect it, nuture it and it will be your friend. This is not the same as any other community! So please don't be defining it based on previous experience or third party comparisons.

Far to often I have read many comments from the community that don't have an understanding for the amount of work that CT do.  That being said, they more than likely will never reach that level of understanding. Guess what? Thats ok.  WE still don't have to react!

From where I stand I see a lot of "Them and Us". The healthy mentality embraces the "We" in all of this.

How about we actually engage in dialog of how "We" can make things better. Lets have an impersonal discussion. Somebody might just have a few gems that might be useful.

Joe - Once again from were I stand you are fueling the negative. I invite you to third position yourself and view it from brians persptective.

Brian - Likewise, you can do the same.

Both of you might see something that you haven't seen before, you might even have an "ahha" moment. Who knows??

The last time I checked this was an Open Source Project!!!

Colin
