Hi.  Is a database required to use/run DNN?  If so how is it created and what does it have to have?  I saw a Microsoft Web Cast on DNN and it said that DNN worked with Microsoft Access.  It went over the basic installation of DNN and IIS, but did not say anything about first setting up a database.

I need help getting DNN up and running.  I get the error:

Domain Name "localhost/myalias" does not exist in the database.

Thanks.

Hey Nadine,
In the super-old versions of DNN, it could run on Microsoft Access.  That's not the case anymore.

In order to run DNN, you will have to have SQL2000, 2005, or Express installed.

Are you trying to run it off your local machine, do you have a hoster, or are you looking for one?

Yup you will need a database to run DNN.  SQL Server or MSDN unless you want to make some changes  to the package  for other  Database support.

Okay.  MSDN is ? Microsoft what?  MS-Access won't work?  I don't have SQL; well, I do, but I don't want to go there just yet.  I want to use something simple just to play around with to learn how to work with DNN.  What do I need to use MSDN/How do I create a database with this?  I need Help for Dummies!

I might have the name wrong as I haven't used it that much. MSDN is the documentation .  :) Sorry.

Basicly MSDE?  Is the single user redistributable version of SQL Server.  It's a free download and I think it even comes with Office now.  It's good for developing for SQL Server if you don't have SQL Server or bundling with software you want to use database type functionality but not require people to have SQL Server.

Access isn't supported by DNN anymore.  If you have SQL Server all you need to do is create a database called dotnetnuke (or anything else if you don't mind changing a couple things) and a user that has access to read, write and create tables.  All of the actual creating of tables and such is handled by the install process.

If you install the MSDE database or the new single user version of SQL 2005 you manage it just the same as you would a full install of SQL Server.  You will also need to know how to format the connection string.  The string in the web.config file is a really good start and you will probably only need to change the user name and password.

Once you settle on SQL server or MSDE you can use MS access (the Office application) to connect to the instance and create the database and run SQL querys.

So for quick and dirty:

  1. Install your DB of choice.
  2. Make it easy on yourself and use the SA user with no password. (Don't do this in real life)
  3. Use MS Access the office frontend to create an Database project that connects to your DB.  It will be called and adp or SQL Project not an Access project.
  4. Name the project DotNetNuke, Save it and close Access.
  5. Change the connection string in web.config to connect to the DB instance as user SA.
  6. Use IE to browse to http://Localhost/DotNetNuke and let it install.
  7. Click the view your portal link at the bottom of the install page and wait a few minutes as DNN create everything and loads the cache.
  8. Note down any errors you see and post em here for help.  :)

That should get you started feel free to e-mail if you get stuck.

Cheers,
