Hi,

I have:

1) 2*Quad core 64K W2K3 sp2
2) 8GB memory
3) 15K RPM raid1 disks
4) running VMWAre ESX (not free version) on Linux with once WMGuest
5) allocated 3GB of memory and 1 processor (due to license of MS).
6) I have MS SQL Workgroup 2005 32 bit (1GB in use) with ReportViewer installed on same WMGuest.
7) Log files and events emptied
8) DNN 4.5.4 gives next figures.

Initial load after 20 min asp.net down: 20 - 25 seconds. Then a child portal: 8 - 10 seconds. After that performance is reasonable, but PHP is still faster :-(. Is there a professional out there willing to log into my server and check why the performance is that bad and tell me what is wrong? Next week we will separate the DB server into another WMGuest W2K to see if databse and server in separate setup will help. The intention is that the server will run a dedicated shop with backend to Navision Attain. So we will definitely lose first customer in the morning having to wait in front of the shop for 20-25 seconds and then 8-10 seconds..so 28 - 35 seconds.

If anybody can tell me how to do a NOT-JIT compilation I am even up to try that. It is a bit a waste (of about 12K euro) for a dedicated DELL server if it can't beat slow elephant MS? I am even willing to create a snapshot on this server for testing only :-).

J.

JIT compilation can be avoided by using a tracking software or service, I prefer to use free service from www.host-tracking.com, that pings the site every 15 min, preventing unload and reports unavaiability by email, including weekly and monthly status report.

Jelle,

As mentioned host-tracker can help, but there should be stuff that can be done to reduce the load when the process does restart.

Feel free to e-mail me!

Hey Jelle,

I run a dedicated server that's a Celeron with 1 Gb of memory and the free version of MS SQL Server. I have about 20 primary websites on 20 different IP addresses, and several hundred child portals. I have over a hundred modules installed on my primary site which runs about 200 websites on child portals. I had the same issue as you, and I fixed it by having host-tracker.com ping EACH URL on the server every 60 minutes and it keeps the JIT compiler from having to restart. I got the load times down to 3-5 seconds for most sites.

I've also noticed that the w3wp.exe process sometimes balloons in memory usage (I think there's a memory leak somewhere in the DNN core) and it slows everything down. If I kill the process, it will restart on its own and speed things up.

I'm up to about 30,000 page views per day total on the server and it's starting to lag again so I spend a lot of time on maintenance keeping the hard drive defragged and the SQL databases in tip-top shape. I know I'm rambling, but I just wanted to let you know that it is possible to get good performance out of DNN, even on sub-par hardware.

Joe

I'm not sure if it's ok to mention a product. But, I heard a lot of good things about "pageblaster". Will pageblaster help ?
