Hi,

I've gone thru the steps of the installation and when I browse to localhost I'm getting a 404 page not found error. I'm doing a fresh install on a Windows 2003 virtual server (VMware). I can browse *.jpg and html files in the site directly with no problem. Any ideas?

Guessing...

IIS website settings;

Home directory tab:  Make sure execute permissions is scripts only.   It will default to None when creating the website.
ASP.NET 2.0 should be set
Documents Tab, default content page Default.aspx, but that should be in there as a default.
On the Web Site tab, click Advanced.  You would see Default under IP address, port 80, and in host header "localhost",  but I am not completely sure that is required, but that is how I setup my server on local machines.

Folders:

Also, for the file folders where you installed DNN, make sure that NETWORK SERVICE has permissions to the main folder for the site, and that the permissions are inherited for all subfolders and files.  Give Full Control permissions to Network service.

I tried to insert some screenshots for you but the insert image function isn't working. Anyways, I've double checked everything you referenced in your note and it still brings up a 404. I turned on directory browsing so I can see the default.aspx file listed there. Even when I click on it from "directory browsing" it brings up a 404. This happens for any aspx page but all other pages (html, images etc) are browsable.

Any new ideas?

I figured it out. It had nothing to do with DNN. Since this was a brand new windows 2003 installation the web service extensions for IIS had to be enabled. By default on windows 2003, IIS doesn't allow dynamic content such as asp or aspx files to be served. You have to specifically enable them. See this article for more information.

I do not know about other versions of IIS yet, but in IIS6, under the folder for Web Service Extensions,  make sure that ASP.NET v2.0.... is listed, and make sure that the status is set to "Allowed".
