What was the error? That'll help point to where things went awry.

Is the upgrade worth it? I guess it really depends on whether you need it or not. The AD Provider for 4.6.0 is improved over what's available in 4.5.5 in that it always checks against the AD and syncs roles (if you've checked the box) which the previous version didn't.

I dunno if it really was worth attempting the upgrade, but as a geneal rule I like to keep software at latest version. Just an old habit.

Anyhow, I am committed now I think, because attempting the upgrade didn't work and rolling back with a restore from backup has caused my "host settings" to fail. I tried the permissions settings on the windows\temp folder, that didn't help. I tried restarting IIS and that didn't help. Rebooting the server didn't help either.

I'd be okay with not upgrading if I can get the host settings working again, but perhaps I'll try the ugrade again and see if that works.

Here is the complete error mesage, if it helps. It's all greek to me.

Error: Host Settings is currently unavailable.

Just to close off my original post, I found out the reson the logins were failing.

I added a DNN profile field of the date type and made it required.   That caused an exception when logging in with existing accounts and the exception caused the login to fail.  It even caused the host login to fail.  The only way out of it was to create a new user, and give it host access (check Superuser int the DNN Users table) through SQL.  When I changed the date field to a text field and removed the requirement, the error went away and I could again log in with the original host (and all other) accounts.
