I am running the basic sql server express setup... how come I cannot see the dnn database using sqlserver mgmt studio?  The site runs fine on my local machine but how can I access the db in the mgmt studio?  Is it because the db file is not mounted?  What is the easy way around this?

If you check the web.config file, you will see that there are 2 connection strings, byd efault the second one is commented:

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express     -->
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

  <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005  <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(local)\SQLEXPRESS;Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
-->

If you want to see the database in the management studion, you have to attach it and then you can comment the first connection string and uncomment the second one instead.

Hope this helps.
