I just installed 4.7 on my webhost, and just right "out of the box", I'm getting *very* slow response times just clicking around.  Is there anything to check for or settings I can tweak?

Try modifying the Performance settings on the Host Settings page. Turn on Caching and Compression. you can find them on the host settings/advanced settings/performance settings section.

What host are you using? That can make a huge difference as well.

WebHost4Life.  Thanks for the settings tip!

In addition to the settings, as mentioned the host can be an issue.

I know that in the past many people have expressed dislike for WebHost4Life.  I personally have not used them, but I have had many people very happy with my recommendations for them to move to the hosting provider I use, 3Essentials.  I have had great  luck with them.

Wow - pretty reasonable!  Do you know if they allow multiple domains with one hosting account?  I saw they support unlimited sub-domains.
