I'm new here but have quite a bit of development experience.

If this question has already been answered somewhere than please just point me in the right direction.

Just wondering what the trade offs are to having a host install DotNetNuke for me vs. doing it myself.

Also, how do most people work with DotNetNuke?  Is any development/customization done locally, then pushed out to the hosting site or do most people just develop against the version they have out at the host.

Thanks.

It really depends on how smart your host is and how technical you are.  Over at PowerDNN, they're 100% devoted to knowing DNN inside and out.  Tell them what you want to do, and they'll install it the best way for you (for free!).

Over at PowerDNN, you almost don't even really have to be a tech person to use dnn because they post videos and everything on how to do stuff.  Its really pretty nice.

Thanks for the answer.   I'll look into PowerDNN.

As far as ongoing maintenance/development of a deployed site, do most people develop locally then push releases out?  I guess I just need to dig in and get a feel for developing in the dotnetnuke environment.

Any heads up info anyone has is appreciated.

The way I do it is kind of a three stage thing.

On the Dev box I install  / compile / change things and then test that it work there.  Once it is I take the changes and push them to a testing server.

After testing for a bit on the testing server and watching all the log files if all is good I move just the changed files to the live server.  I then package up an install package on the dev system and save it off for the next time I do a complete reinstall.
