Hi.

I am sameer. and well interested of using DNN to built up our web Application. due to my lack of knowledge with DNN, I am ok and can view my site with, when my site is running under my machine (Local IIS). but the problem starts when I uploaded or Deployed the Site to the server over the net. I just upload my files to server and create vertual directory. there I can only read an error message as below...........

"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"

So please let me get out of this error and am urgent on resolving this problem

Thanx

the error explains what is going on: dnn is not able to connect to the db server. There might be a couple of causes:

  • you didnt open up sql server 2005. By default all connections are turned off, so you need to allow remore connections. Please refer to sql server documentation to find out how to do that
  • your connection string is wrong

I am experiencing the exact same error when migrating some installs to a new server. I can deploy new sites just fine but can't attach a database from another server using the EXACT same connection string used by the new installations that work just fine!

Why would the same string work for new installations but not when it's used for attaching a db?

Jack, there might be a problem with the sql logins you are using. It is not possible to just move a db from one server to the other and keep the same user identity, you need to do some extra work to make this work.

a while back i wrote a blog about that, it might be of some help to you: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1269/Default.aspx

Thanks for the reply.

We have migrated db's dozens of times in the past using both the back & restore and disconnect-reconnect method and it has always worked. I am looking at SQL compare as there is no doubt it is a better solution.

After playing with this some more I am wondering if this is a 64 vs 32 bit issue. The server we are migrating to is running 2003 Standard Edition 64 bit. The data is coming from a 32 bit machine.

The other issue I can't get my arms around is the string. SQL Express 2005 was installed exactly the same way on both boxes using the "Default" instance, yet the string for the new 64 bit box uses (Local) and the string for the 32 bit box uses Servername\SQLExpress.

I am probably missing something obvious here so any help as always is really appreciated.
