are you already using DotNetNuke? In this case you only need to transfer files and database and alter a few settings to get DNN running on a properly prepared hosting site, I would recommend to use a hoster, who is familiar with DNN, there are several advertising here. The host will also provide a proper mail server to get emails working.

Sebastion,

Thanks for your advice.  Yes, the city moved us to DNN more than a year ago.  I have administrator rights.  I won't be able to get to the files and database until the city gets ithe site up again.  Fortunately, I  have  copies of almost everything on my hard drive; so reconstructing the site would not be a big deal.

Mel, if yu can recreate the content and have a copy of the skin, you can start with a new site on any host. of course, you need either to update the name servers entry for your domain or have an option to forward from current web site address to the new location.

Sebastian,

Thanks again for the tips.

I am an ordinary computer user doing the webmaster job by default, so I don't know if I can get the website up without going with some kind of service provider such as you suggested in your previous message.  I don't have a copy of the skin on the site that is down, so I will have to use on that comes with DNN.  I think we will have to get a new domain name because the current one ends with the city's domain name.

If the website is properly hosted, do the automatic e-mail notificiation and forum and feedback modules work in the the latest version of DNN?

Ever since they migrated to these "new" forums, I, too, have had serious problems with the DNN site...from no notifications to not being able to post to slooooooow response time to errors and the inability to search, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc...

I used to login everyday and just read the latest 2-3 pages of posts to continue to build my knowledge base of the platform, but with the current state of affairs, I no longer troll the forums, save tonight to see if things have improved. During my weeks on not being able to post to the forums, II was, however, able to download and install another platform in less time than it took to pull up the forums the other day, though...3 minutes to include installing WAMP. Wow.
