I'm trying to add a parent portal with a new subdomain (i.e. new.domain.com) but I'm getting the error  "The Portal Alias Name You Specified Already Exists. Please Choose A Different Portal Alias."  I've used this DNN install since around ver. 3.1 so it's had several upgrades and is now 4.7.0.  At one point this subdomain was a parent portal but it was deleted.   Now I can't find what it's keying off of to say that alias still exists.  If I run stored proc, GetPortalByAlias it returns null on that name.  I can add the httpalias to another portal and delete it with no problem but if I try to use that alias as the parent portal name, it says the alias already exists.  What else is it looking at other than table PortalAlias? I actually ran a stored proc I have to search my entire DotNetNuke database for the text of my new httpalias and it finds nothing so that makes me think it's something on the filesystem but I don't see anything in the /portals folders that would do it.  Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Accepted Answer

this is a known issue in 4.7.0, and will be fixed in 4.8.0. See here for more info: http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?id=6744&PROJID=2

If you feel comfortable doing so, you can fix this in your current installation (it will not require a recompilation), you can find the fix in my last comment on the issue

Erik,

Thanks for the fix.  I tried it and it worked like a charm (with no recompiliation required, just like you said!).  I agree with you that it's a "bug".  What really confused me was that I could add the same alias to another portal in this DNN install with no problem so the logic used there to check for duplicate aliases works fine.  So to me it's a bug and can't be "by design".

Thanks again for the quick response.   You really show the power of a strong open-source community.

John

Hi,

We are recieving this same error.  I clicked through to the fix mentioned (http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?id=6744&PROJID=2)? and didn't exactly follow the solution.  Would you please provide more specific instruction on how to fix this?  I'm not exactly versed in working under the hood..

Much obliged,
cjepp

I'm unpleasantly surprised that after all this time and all these upgrades, the bug still exists in much later versions, e.g. 7.3.4 !!

I'm getting the same error on 7.3.4 !!

The link http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/V... that Erik is proposing is not of course available after all these years since 2006 !

People reporting the same issue in various Community posts:

http://www.dnnsoftware.com/forums/for...

http://www.dnnsoftware.com/forums/for...

I'll paste the same reply on all the above just to unite & aggregate the open issue!

So hopeless !
