I began building a DNN site for my company on my own server at home, in anticipation of launching the company's new Web server.

I am running SQL 2k5.

They have SQL 2k.

Oops.

Is there a migration tool available? If, not then

I am looking at exporting/importing the data as it is my understanding that the disk read process is different.

As if, that wasn't enough, I am obviously moving the whole install to a brand new server/domain. Sounds fun huh?

If this is the case & I have to export/import then I was wondering if anybody has experienced this issue and if so, how successful was the transition? Considering that I have only put together the infrastructure and the content is ... light, would I be better off just going with a new install?

As always, thanks in advance!

Marc - you coined the EXACT WORDS I emailed a client a couple of weeks ago.. I simply could not get a 2005 build to work on our 2000 environment.  You can go forward but you can't go back.

I called in all my resources to try, we opened up virtual pcs with 2000, 2005, tried every single way possible and after about 2 days - I had to admit defeat. I exported the whole site and rebuilt in sql 2000. We are going to have to work out ways to address this in the future.

So yes - you'll have some fun.. and I sincerely don't envy you.

There was no successful transition from the XD camp in bringing the two versions together in a happy union.. it ended up like an ugly divorce and everyone was poorer from it.. and we never used solicitors..

Sigh. Figures.

Well, live and learn. Won't do that again.

Can the company install SQL 2005 Express alongside SQL 2000?

I don't know how much content you have, but it should not be too difficult to migrate the data since the table structure is exactly the same.  Before giving up I would look at a tool like Red-Gate SQL Compare and Data Compare or the APEX SQL Suite.  Both of these tools should be able to connect to both a SQL 2005 and SQL 2000 db and do the migration (assuming you are not using any modules with SQL 2005 specific code).
