Hey there!

I can't seem to figure this out... I have a SQL server serving my DNN portal and my SQL process is always at at least 50% cpu and it constantly spikes up to 100% CPU.  Any idea why it is always doing this?  Is there some way I can try and figure out what in DNN is causing so much CPU usage?

Thx

Tim, there are any number of tools that will help you identify which queries are the most active responsible for the most resource consumption on the server.  This would give you some insight into what process is running that is causing this.

Your CPU utilizations sounds high, even without the spike.  I've seen server AV applications occasionally go awry and chew up 25% of a CPU... But I suspect the spike is asociated with a buffer flush ( e.g. Site Log, Event Log, Users Online ), a scheduled job, etc.  How do your logs look?  Is your DB growing?  How many records in your EventLog?

Hey there!

If it matters, I have about 2,000 portals on my 1 DNN install.  My EventLog is seemingly endless in size (millions of records I'm sure).  Is there a best practise way to purge my EventLog?

Is there a way to make all DNN portals not use the EventLog at all?

Maybe you should consider the Benefactor program?

Honestly, Tim, if makes me a little nervous ( for your 2000 portal admins ) to hear you ask the kinds of questions that I am seeing in this ( and other ) threads.  Forgive me, but I would be remiss for not mentioning it.

The Professional DotNetNuke ASP.Net Portals book goes into pretty good detail on how some of this architecture works and how to tune it.  But you can find some basic information sprinkled throughout the field level Help on Host Settings, Log Configuration and in some of the documentation in the public download ( eg. on the Scheduler architecture, etc ).

By way of example, our single DNN instance ( we'e only hosting a handful of portals out of this particular one ) generates only a few hundred EventLog entries per day... and those mostly informational.  This instance handles about 10M page views per month ( on average ).  It's highly likely that the single most frequently occuring item in your EventLog is an error for purging that log ( trimming its history by date )... which is probably failing every few minutes.

Sounds like a good deal to me.  I will sign up at least for the Silver Level shortly.  I'd sign up now but I'm dishing out a ton and taking in nothing.  Give me a week or so and you'll see an icon next to my name.  Does the private forum imply that more people will be able to help with my oddities?

I see it like this...  DotNetNuke has made an investment in me.  I'm just a normal guy, working a normal job.  I'm not wealthly... nowhere near it.  I stumbled onto DNN one day and had a good idea. I've taken a considerable amount from the DotNetNuke project and community in hopes that my own project will be successful.  Once I have even a hint of success, I plan on repaying the DotNetNuke project and community back greatly.

I would love to sign up for the Benefactor program.  Unfortunately, I don't have the cash lying around at this moment, however, hopefully my paypal account will have a few hundred deposited to it in a weekThen I'll have a happy icon by my name.  Promise!

I'm learning just like the rest of them :)

I have a copy... I must have missed a lot if good information.  I'll check it out some more :)

I have set in the Host->Settings to have the EventLog buffer 0 and days 0, yet there still is a ton of things written to the EventLog.  I can't quite seem to purge it, either.  Could you tell me the best way to purge it, as well as how to flat out make portals not use the Event Log at all?
