Hello,

WHAT I NEED

I need to make an events calendar with a smaller footprint on the screen.  To give you an idea what I need, the following image shows 5 dates with events (Aug 21, 28, 29, Sept 12-13).  The idea is that you get a list of events for a day when you click on it.

WHAT I HAVE

The vanilla DNN events calendar is huge by comparison, because it leaves room for listing events on the calendar:

When clicking on an event, the whole page refreshes, with the events module updated to a detailed view.  This is confusing.  What I would rather do is have a separate page that comes up when an event is being looked at, instead of just changing the view on the events module.

I have been hunting for an aftermarket events module that would fit our needs, but so far, all the events modules I have found have large format month calendars like DNN vanilla.   Examples:

Have you tried changing the theme/skin to the Small option?  Module settings, Event Module Setiings, Theme/Skin.

Also, an alternative is the XMod Calendar, which can do just about anything.

Jeff,

Thank you for the tip to the small format of the DNN vanilla events calendar.

And another thank you for tipping me off to XMod.  XMod looks like something we need in our shop.  I have been looking also at Enterprise forms by Ethuongmai.  It seems like an excellent product for making and managing forms in DNN.

I realize XMod and Enterprise Forms are a broader topic than the calendar function, but while I am here, I have a 'sanity' question you might be able to help with.

SANITY QUESTION
Had it not been for your mentioning XMod, I would not know about it.  My problem is I feel disoriented to the DNN world.  How do I become "in the know" regarding modules?  Are we all on our own to figure out the serious modules from the scrappy ones?  This problem is compounded by the fact that trial editions often are not available.

My fear is I will recommend and start implementing a DNN module, only to discover I picked the wrong one, because I did not know about the better offering, such as XMod.  Any thoughts there?

Thank  you again for your assistance,

Dan

I might step in here. We have the same question a number of times.

Our main source for DNN modules is SnowCovered. We always look at the top selling modules list. If a module is listed there, it signals to me that many people have spend money to obtain it, so it must have quality. For some time the DNN Reviewed mark added some backing that the module at least have been reviewed by DNN specialist.

Then: nothing better then really testing it. Price of modules is most of the time low, so ordering a module, testing it locally, asking questions to the supplier, looking at his website, help to give confidence that the module can be supported.  That leaves about 1 out of 3-4 modules that pass our quality mark.

In the end, we always try to buy source versions of the modules, so we have an insurance in case of mishap to the original supplier.
