Thanks for your input Erik.  I have the same experience as pkblanton on this one.  I did not modify my dnn 3.0 webconfig with regard to these keys.

You say that there is an import module called AFAIK, but I have never heard of it. Where do I get it?

Also, you say that I should not copy the autogenerate section to dnn 4.0, but only update the dnn 4.0 web.config with the following?

  <machineKey
        validationKey="88274583C0B0FA57D5E12D4096F109E769E1391B"
        decryptionKey="FB33DE7F5C36906AA094F8FA486DE3E4CB7BAE5D58AC793B"
        decryption="3DES"
        validation="SHA1" />

AFAIK is not a module, just internet shorthand for 'as far as I know'

I've always been rather amazed at the ease of upgrades with DNN. It's the upgrade to 4.3.5 that hosed my installation, and I've still not been able to recover from file system and permission problems. My portal admins don't have permissions to see/upload files and not all folders/files are represented.

I also have stumbled upon some confusing transition facts.  I read how people have successfully upgraded from 3.3.x to 4.3.x..... and even in Scott Walker's blog regarding the DNN 3.x "Sunset" here
I must say I don't seem to get exactly what/where this "simple upgrade mechanism for users to move from DotNetNuke 3.x to DotNetNuke 4.x" seems to be located.

Do we simply
  1. Backup our DB (obviously)
  2. install 4.3.x Install version over our current 3.3.x version?
  3. Modify the release.config by
    1. changing the connection string in 2 places
    2. ensuring the changing of both Validation codes
  4. And browse to site??????
I mean it sounds simple enough, and it comes CLOSE.... but I always get errors in the sql updates around versions
4.3.1 and 4.3.3 and 4.3.5  and the "Export Template" consistently show an error.

Please!!!!  These aren't the first questions regarding this topic at all...and exhaustive searches on MANY MANY sites haven't landed me much closer to an answer.

What/When/Where/How is this "simple upgrade mechanesim" located and running?

Thank you Erik.  That did it for me.  Just add the <machineKey> from DNN 3.x to the DNN 4.x web.config was all that was needed.  My 1,200 users and admins all have access at this time.

The other crucial piece is to insure that you have all desired modules installed in DNN 4.x before copying /portal/* and sql database.  I use SQL 2000 for both DNN 3.x and 4.x without a problem (yet)!

Question!!

I tried by creating a new blank installation of DNN 4.4 and adding all of the modules from my DNN 3.3.   Then I read that you should copy of the Portals folder (that makes sense) and then copy the old DB into the new DNN 4.4 DB.

This part confuses me.  I tried to copy the tables over using Enterprise Manager, but I kept getting foreign key errors and insert fail errors (from a few days ago, sorry I can't recall the specifics at this time).  And only about half of the tables copied over.

Also, wouldn't the modules table be completely different from the new modules added? (ordering so primary keys?)  I obviously am not grasping some idea here.  Any help is greatly appreciated!
