Just wondering, since it never came up before....

My 4.4 to 4.8 upgrade broke (see prior post). This is a live business site (hosted server) and I really need to get it back up ASAP. If I can't figure out the problem, can I just purge the entire root folder and re-FTP my site backup? And if I do that, will I need to restore my database from the backup as well, even though the 4.8 never actually ran?

Thanks.

what you are talking about is a restore, not a downgrade (downgrades are not possible with dnn)

The proper way to restore a backup is to restore all files, and to restore the database.

Also, for production sites, it is probably better to do a test upgrade on a copy of your site (and copy of the db of course). That way you will know that the upgrade works.

There have been reports about problems upgrading dnn versions prior to 4.6.2 to 4.8.0, to be on the safe side, you could first upgrade your site to 4.6.2 and then to 4.8.0

As Erick mentioned you need to ensure that you restore both the files and the database.  To reduce the possibility of someone accessing the site before it is fully restored I would recommend placing an app_offline.htm file in your root folder to display a "Currently Unavailable" message.

Thanks, I know about the App_Offline.htm and have it in the site root, but I still get the error page. (Server Error in '/' Application).

Should I first delete the whole portal from the webroot folder, or will the backup overwrite files as necessary?

Thanks.

We "identified" this problem earlier in the week at a meeting of the Capital DotNetNuke Users Group in the DC area.

If you can go back to the original site and upgrade to 4.6.2, you should then be able to upgrade to 4.8.0 without a problem.
