I was investigating an issue with global resources in DNN 4.8 and found the following line in the default config files:

                <remove extension=".resx"/>

Can anyone tell me is there a reason why .resx files are not compiled and if any problems will arise if I enable .resx compilation?

DotNetNuke does not use .Net 2.0 localization engine, resource files are read from the localization component and cached in memory, allowing several levels of customisation that is not provided by .Net 2.0. Please have a look into the Localization whitepaper available from the Documentation page in Resources menu above.
