I tried upgrading a DNN 3.5 site to DNN 4.08

during the upgrade process i received one error. the log file said

Error: helpURL

after upgrade the portal seems to work fine except for the login. Whenever i try to login it get the following error

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Any idea how to fix this besides going back to 3.5 ?

thanks

Mike

Mike,

The error you experienced has something to do with the scripts running out of order during the install.  I don't know exactly what causes it, but I have run into these problems before.  This seems to happen a lot with 4.40.00.log which would be your case.  I would suggest that you try the upgrade one more time.  Roll your site back to 3.5, and follow the instructions on this site

I followed this site when I did my last upgrade and everything went great.

hope this helps

THanks

i reverted back to 3.1 (it was 3.1 actually not 3.5)

then i applied the upgrades as listed on the site you linked to

3.01.01 to 3.02.02 worked fine

3.02.02 to 4.03.07 seemed to work fine

but when i saw the main screen i noticed that the register link was missing. the login link was there.

When i clicked login i got the following error

A critical error has occurred.
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_ModuleSettings'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'ModuleSettings'. The statement has been terminated.

Just to make sure. When upgrading from 3.02.02 to 4.03.07 i have to change the site from ASP.NET 1.1 to ASP.NET 2.0 correct ?

Any more ideas ?

Thanks

Mike

I am scratching my head trying to figure out why you where getting that primary key issue.  As  far as I know all the primary keys in DotNetNuke are auto generated, and I don't think the module settings table has a primary key.  I know it doesn't have one in version 4.5.4.  I am not sure about later versions.  If it works though we can just chalk it up to some weird unexplainable problem that misteriously fixed itself

glad it worked

Mike
