If I'm creating a new website using VWDexpress2008 and selecting the DNN starter site ...

There is an important question in the replies to your question which you have not answered: "Are you sure that you want to use VWD?".  If you just want to install DNN, use the install version.  Only use the starter kit if you want to create some new modules.

I think that the starter kit is badly named and causes confusion, and that its name implies to new users that it is the correct version to use first.  In fact the correct version is the install version.

You can read this post on my website about how to install DNN.  I have installed literally hundreds of DNN sites.  Since you want to install on a hosted server you can skip the sections on IIS and file permissions, they will already have been done for you.  Start with the section on creating a database and go from there.

First, unless you will be developing modules on this installation, use the Install version, not the Starter Kit.  Beyond that, I always install DNN in the root of the site and it works perfectly.

the starter kit is for starting website "projects" in VWD express.  So typicalyl they are created in users\username\doccuments\visualwebdev\websites\websitename

the starter kit should not be used for live versions as the others said...use the install version unless you plan on reinstalling often and messin with the core framework for some reason.

BUT, on a side now...if you're a tinkerer like me....the starter kit is really cool 'cause you can blast new installs really fast from within VWD....just a matter I guess of your ultimate goal, more than what you have I guess.

If your looking to just play, I'd use the starter kit personally.  Open VWD2008, click file, pull down to new website..and in the templates select DNN  Web framework.

When it finally opens, hit CTR-F5, and it'll run on whatever port VWD wants to run on, using it's internal web server, as localhost:portname   it won't work for subportals due to the way that DNN dynamically rewrites the addresses....but thats not a huge concern.  Whats great about the starter kit is you can just start a new one over and over again till your comfortable.

It's kind of a preferance thing I guess.  You'll need to learn the install version no matter what...Ohh...I'll duck out of this conversation I think 'cause I'm probably  causing more confusion than its worth for you :->

Thanks...I am using VWD and maybe I will design some modules, although I didn't need to initially. Since everyone keeps telling me not to do it this way, I'll go back and try with the installer <sigh>.

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I deleted the entire installation and dropped all the database tables, and tried once more to do a clean install. This time, the database population failed on the first version install (4.4.0) with:

Installing Database - Version 4.4.0...Upgrading Database to Version ERROR: See E:\websites\DNNRoot\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\04.04.00.log for more information...FAILURE 400 - Conversion from string "ERROR: See E:websitesDNNRootProv" to type 'Integer' is not valid.

This probably won't matter if I start over again, but I'm not sure if it points to some other problem. Also, after the first failed install, portals and portalalias tables were never populated, and I was curious if there's any way to manually populate them? It seems like I was really close to success.

Just as a follow up...after the database scripts failed, I see that all the tables have been created again, but if I browse to the root directory, I again receive

Domain Name temp.[mydomain].com Does Not Exist In The Database

Is there any way to recover at this point, or should I just pack it in and use the installer.

I'd just keep installing over and over again till you get it to work.

did you check the .log file it refers to for more information?
