Check the section titled "DotNetNuke WebControl Design Decisions" on page 2 of that pdf. It goes into the reasons behind it.

In the long run the new menu should be more standards compliant and quicker. There's a chart somewhere showing the difference in kb loads, but I can't seem to find it now.

One of the biggest reasons for the change was the fact that SOLPART is *not* very search engine friendly... correction, it's NOT friendly at all. Many people were also put off by some of the limitations of SOLPART and its little quirks. DNNMenu however is not as well documented as SOLPART at the moment, and I have yet to wrap my head around it all but it will be the proper way to go, we just need to sink our teeth into it a bit more.

Is there any way to hide the whole NAV menu including HOME unless I'm signed in as a host or admin?  I don't want the home link to be veiwable when logged off or when a regular user is logged in.  Thanks

You can remove the menu from your skin and instead add the admin menu skin object from this site: http://dotnetnuke.subzero-solutions.net

Create an account first and then go to the Downloads section, find the Modules page and it'll be there somewhere.
