This is the first time I try to update an DNN-installation, so I guess I'm doing something wrong. I've tried to upgrade from DNN 4.8 to 4.8.1. Did it wrong a couple of times (missed some things in the web.config and made the mistake of renaming develop.config instead of release.config) and then I followed Mitch Sellers guide: http://www.mitchelsellers.com/Blogs/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/22/Default.aspx .

I get the following error when upgrading and my site is now unavailable, showing an error when viewing default.aspx ("Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ")

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

You do have a backup from before the upgrade, correct?

What you are posting looks like a brand new installation not an upgrade.Either you used a different database name or you've modified something.

What version were you using before?

Whenever you rename a new release.config to web.config always remeber to fix these three things in web.config.

1) SQL connections string(s)
2) machine keys
3) objectQualifier

Based on the modules you have installed you may also have to fix other settings in web.confg or SiteUrls.config.

I hope this is of some help to you.

As Dwayne indicated, the installer saw this as a new installation rather than an upgrade.  As the error message indicated that a username already existed in the database (host or admin user), this would appear to be the classic case of not copying the objectQualifier value from the old web.config to the new v 4.8.1 web.config file.  I sure hope you have backups of both the site and database so that you can roll back and try the upgrade again. If not, let us know, as most of us have at one time or another had to reconstruct a database following missing this one crucial step.

Thanks for the replies, guys. You're absolutely right - I missed the ObjectQualifier...The "upgrade" was in fact an installation of new tables.

Hopefully I'll be able to restore it from my backup. Or maybe I can edit the web.config adding the right ObjectQualifier and retry upgrading it?

I'll give it a try.

Thanks again.
