Hello everybody.

For the last few hours I am trying to build a module, the way I have build any other until now, however, it refuses to execute OnInit and/or OnLoad routins. I am creating some custom controls, initializing them in OnInit, and in CreateChildControls, they do not exist. After some debuggin I came to the conclusion that it does not execute anything inside OnInit/OnLoad, so when executing CreateChildControls, those controls are null.

Partial Class ViewNewBooking
        Inherits Entities.Modules.PortalModuleBase

    Protected WithEvents ctPsgList As PsgList
    Protected WithEvents ajaxPsgListPanel As UpdatePanel

    Private Sub Page_Init(ByVal s As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Init
        ctPsgList = New PsgList
    End Sub

    Protected Overrides Sub CreateChildControls()
        CreateControls()
        CreateTables()
        MyBase.CreateChildControls()
    End Sub

    Private Sub CreateControls()
        ajaxPsgListPanel = New UpdatePanel
    End Sub

    Private Sub CreateTables()
        ajaxPsgListPanel.ContentTemplateContainer.Controls.Add(ctPsgList) '**** ERROR **** ctPsgList is Null
    End Sub
End Class

I tried even with Overrides OnInit, with same results. What am I doing wrong?

Because CreateChildControls may be called at anytime in the page/control life-cycle it is very possible that it is being called prior to Page_Init. In fact, it may be called more than once. This is especially true for a dynamic module (without a .ascx file) which I think is what you're building as there is a forced call to CreateChildControls when the module is added to the Page's control tree.

Therefore, all controls should be instantiated (New . . . ) when they are first declared, in the constructor, or in CreateChildControls. Without doing this, it is highly likely that ctPsgList will be null when CreateChildControls is executed.
