Easier to modify the events module, store module, or perhaps go with a 3rd party module? Know of any good ones?

Here is a brief list of features planned for V1.

3. Supports ICAL - Generate correct ICAL files
4. Recurrence Model - Ability to define an event as reoccurring.
5. Marketing Functionality - ability to market your event using email. Basic statistics i.e. email opens and click thrus.
6. RSVP Functionality w/basic reporting

Catalook.net Store is a highly regarded ecommerce module for DNN.  It was originally designed as a hotel booking system and has been vastly expanded and is actively developed/updated.  Not sure how it would work with your scenario, but it is a very affordable solution worth looking into:  http://www.catalook.net.  I've successfully used it for data subscription via paid access and though it can be quite an undertaking to customize the skin and layout, the general config and set up is pretty easy/intuitive and worth far more than the $100 they charge for it.  Definitely worth investigating for your needs as it would also handle the payment gateway as well as the calendar booking, but not sure if it handles booking multiple people to a scheduled day, their tech support and forum are pretty quick to answer questions, though.

If you are looking to create your own event registration form and process payment with Paypal in one hit you may want to check out Enterprise Forms.  We now have Paypal payment integration that can be processed upon form submission.
