I suddenly cannot log in to our site. The Admin, Host and any user account all come back as incorrect password.

It may be a coincidence but, this started after repairing a problem with our domain controller. A link to our active directory is not enabled but here is what happened.

To make a long story short: Our SYSVOL folder on our domain controller was lost and a restore was unable to be carried out..The default Domain Policy was recreated and updated from the active directory and registry. Everything in our domain is working ok now but our web site. Our DNN website is installed on a system that is a member of the domain. It uses SQL Server 2000 Standard. The SQL server starts ok and is showing no errors. The website is up and running but will not allow a login.

Our site only has users created by the Admin so our webpage has no 'Register' or 'Create account' on it so there is no way to create a new user and transfer the password to the Admin. (i.e. Create a user and copy / paste the password in asp_membership table via the Enterprise manager)

If you try using 'Remember Password' you get the following error: `There was an error retrieving your password. No password was sent.`

It is DNN 4.5.1 and no updates have been done to create the problem like changed machine codes in the web.config

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing is to check the machine keys against a backup, just to be sure they are the same. Then, if you can see the superuser in aspnet_membership and {objectQualifier}_Users with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), you can temporarily change the Membership.PasswordFormat to Clear (0) and enter plain text for the superuser password. You can use that to get back into your DotNetNuke site to get you going again.

Then you can make a new user/password and paste that back into the superuser password and restore the PasswordFormat to 2 (Encrypted). Always make a backup of the database before and during this modification.

There are samples here and around the web to do this with the asp_net membership provider.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Thanks for urging me to take a look at the web.cofig file. The keys were different. After restoring the file from a backup all is fine. I can't for the life of me understand how the file got changed.

Thanks a bundle.

Ok I did a similar oops and thank goodness for this thread I was able to recover everyone's accounts (reset their PW).... but i can not get the HOST account PW to change. I'm currently stuck with my host PW in clear text with format set to (0). I made a new account using my standard PW and then copied it over the encoded PW, but it will not accept. Any ideas?
