As an additional comment...

The LoginTabId and the UserTabId, ever after running the OpenSesame.aspx file, are still set to NULL.

Just some fyi.  I would have expected something different.

NULL would be the correct value as it corresponds with Not Specified. Why it happened that they got set to 55 (your homepage) I can't say. Usually it's a case of an admin inadvertantly setting them to a page that doesn't have a login control on it.

The obvious question now is... why did this happen in the first place? Good to know the why to not find myself in the same boat again.

Login as Admin and go to menu Admin >> Site Settings.  In the Advanced Settings section, there are options to set the Login and User page.  The User page is the Profile (if user login) or Register page (if user not login).  Someone updated the Login and User page to Home page tab on your site.

A second solution we found after reading this thread for our own similar issue: admin > User Accounts > User Settings  and make sure the "Redirect after (Login / Logout / Registration )" is set to blank.
