This is excellent Michael, thanks for writing about it. I signed up yesterday and my account with Live Mesh is active. I also just signed up for the developer SDK.

Thanks for

If your ISPs decide to limit, or as we know it - cap, your bandwidth usage, still consider yourself lucky. We have DSL in South Africa. Highest speed available is 4MB, if you're lucky. Also depends if there are cables. Our cables got stolen on the 29th of February this year and they refuse to replace it. We currently also only have one choice, Telkom (Hellkom).

All DSL accounts are capped. The entry level is 1GB per month, while business can afford to go up to 100GB bandwidth per month. However, they pay upwards of R 10000 for that cap, roughly  $1500 per month.

  • We need a DotNetNuke module that mimics the Live Desktop for users. This should be done in Silverlight.
  • A "User Desktop" module is installed or it is part of the Core
  • A "Desktop Enabled" module (for example a picture Gallery) is installed in the DotNetNuke site. It will operate like a normal module but allow an administrator to give "Desktop Access" to a security group.
  • Those users will see the Module in their "Programs" folder when they view their "Desktop" (A Silverlight application that resembles Windows Desktop)
  • If they "Run the program" they can use it just like they would a normal Windows program with drag and drop. For example, importing the pictures from your hard drive would allow you to use an interface that looks like the Windows file manager.
  • Additional "DotNetNuke Desktop Enabled" module would include: Forums Reader/Poster, Blog Reader/Poster, Chat client.

I have made a DotNetNuke module that comes close to this:

I'm glad you are looking at this.  Mesh is a really huge paradigm shift.  At PDC MS should be releasing the API for developing against the Mesh sync framework.  We should put Mesh at the Core of the system allowing all modules to eventually tap into the sync API.  I envision being able to have a live calendar on a DNN site that is synced to my Windows Live calendar through mesh, Mesh folders on my desktop that can sync to a DNN site making the content management workflow even better.  There are huge possibilities with Mesh going forward.  What do you think about making it a Core DNN API that gets built in post Cambrian?

My opinion:

  • Live Desktop is cool. I wish we thought of it. I think it will actually take off.
  • People will want to administer their DotNetNuke website from their Live Desktop.
