Live Mesh  Modified By Michael Washington on 4/23/2008 4:49:28 PM

Ok Live Mesh: https://www.mesh.com/Welcome/LearnMore.aspx

My opinion:

  • Live Desktop is cool. I wish we thought of it. I think it will actually take off.
  • People will want to administer their DotNetNuke website from their Live Desktop.
  • We need a DotNetNuke module that mimics the Live Desktop for users. This should be done in Silverlight.
    • A "User Desktop" module is installed or it is part of the Core
    • A "Desktop Enabled" module (for example a picture Gallery) is installed in the DotNetNuke site. It will operate like a normal module but allow an administrator to give "Desktop Access" to a security group.
    • Those users will see the Module in their "Programs" folder when they view their "Desktop" (A Silverlight application that resembles Windows Desktop)
    • If they "Run the program" they can use it just like they would a normal Windows program with drag and drop. For example, importing the pictures from your hard drive would allow you to use an interface that looks like the Windows file manager.
    • Additional "DotNetNuke Desktop Enabled" module would include: Forums Reader/Poster, Blog Reader/Poster, Chat client.

This looks cool Michael.  I like how you are always looking at outside things and how they might integrate with DNN.

The downside to things like Live Mesh is if the ISP's are successful in moving to a useage based rate structure from a speed based one. If that happens (it already has in cell modems) it could put a huge dent in services such as these.

You have a point but I think the users of services like these are the kind that are willing to pay a premium for adequate bandwidth. For example I pay $50 a month for my home DSL. I think more people would pay that much if they had a good reason to. If you only need basic email and web browsing it's not worth it.

Like you I pay $50 per month for my cable modem. But, both both your DSL and my cable have unlimited usage now.  If the ISP's limit that usage to 50gb per month and I stop watching my Netflix instant movies, stop watching Lost from abc.com, and kick my son off Xbox Live I'd still be over that limit.  Probably quite a bit over.

The ISP's are pissed that the content providers make quite a bit more money than their measly $5 billion per year in profits (that's just AT&T).  But maybe limiting usage is a pipe dream on their part as such a limit would kill online advertising (how do you charge people for something they didn't ask for?) as well as quite a few other businesses.

It's a big concern to me because, like many other businesses/services in the USA, ISP's have become monoploies. And when you own a monopoly you can do whatever you want whenever you want.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread and please keep the posts coming - considering my interests your blog posts are the highlight of the DNN blogs in my opinion.

The concept behind LiveMesh is awesome and personally I think it's well overdue.  I personally work on about 4 different desktops in a given week.  Having to ability to have certain items (like reference PDFs, etc. available everywhere would be priceless).  As far as barriers to this technology, it's not just the ISPs.  I can see corporation wanting to block this type of thing almost immediately, and I'm sure they will.
