You might have to recycle the application pool after you changed aliases directly from the db. Due to dnn caching, the old url will be cached.... ;)

It came up because I gave up and started over with a fresh install.

Thanks for trying to help me.  I learned a little bit more about how the aliases work, and that is already proving useful on another project.  I'll also have the answer if someone else has similar trouble.
