is it possible to remove the Search Box from the home page - when a user is not logged in?

I don't mind the search box being there when users are logged in, but if they are not logged in - I would like to remove it.
Or, as a work around - perhaps use a blank page for the log in screen would be a better option?

regards,

mark richardson

Yes, you have to edit the skin ASCX file. I your scenario above do this:

Find you skin file, say it's called skin1.ascx. copy it and name it skin2.ascx

Assuming you have applied skin1 as you skin for the entire site, On your login page go to page settings and set the page skin to skin2.ascx

Now open skin1.ascx in visual studio, html editor or text editor. Locate the tag that says <dnn:search ........ />. Just remove, save and you're done. That may mess up the look and feel of your page so you may have to play around with the layout to get it right.

Thanks,

I am not sure which .ascx skin file it is.

I have located a list of skins here: >> \admin\Skins\ and edited Search.ascx, but this did not a make a difference.

is there a way to detect which skin file is being used by the  home page please?

regards,

mark

It's whatever skin you have assigned to it.  Open the page properties, Appearance and look at the skin.  You will find the skins at /portals/_default/skins/{SkinName}/{Skin}.ascx.  The /_default/ portal might be a portal number if the skin is installed for only a specific portal.

You want to remove the Search object, a line that will look something like:

<dnn:SEARCH runat="server" id="dnnSEARCH" .....

Keep in mind that you may need to insert something to have the skin format ocrrectly, or adjust the skin layout.

I need some help with this too. I know what skin I have but I cant follow your instructions about how to get into the properties so I can delete the line about the search box. Would someone mind writing very specifically how to get in to edit a skin. Starting from where? I only use DNN about every 6 months so I am a little rusty in navigating my way around. Thanks in advance! joanie
