Hi,

I have a dotnetnuke site installed in a host company and it's working.

But now i would like to make a copy of that same site and content to my local machine.

I've tried to restore the database and site, but without success.

What are the steps i should take to complete this task?

Thanks

HF

I do this quite often, either moving the site local or to another hosting company.

Here is the steps I take:

  1. Setup IIS on the destination system (in your case the local machine)
  2. Create a Website directory on your destination machine
  3. Create a web or v-dir instance in IIS that points to the website dir
  4. Setup SQL Server, MSDE, Express, etc on the destination system (again your local machine)
  5. Create a database for DNN on your destination machine
  6. Copy all of the DNN Files to you website directory
  7. Update the Web.Config to point to the new database using the new databases login credentials
  8. Either backup the site database on the source (remote) server and restore it on the destination system, or replicate the data from the source system to the destination system
  9. Browse the site

That should get you going.

Note: Make sure you are running the correct version of the .Net Framework and that it is configured correctly for this site instance.  If in doubt, use the free ASP.Net Version Switcher to check and update (if needed) the .Net version of the web instance you created. http://www.denisbauer.com/NETTools/ASPNETVersionSwitcher.aspx

Hi,

Thanks for your solution, i had already tried it but i did not work because the backup my hosting company did was not ok, this time around they did it properly and it worked exactly as it should... Almost...

I just have a funny problem, all the pictures through out the site do not appear, only the name appears but the rest is blank and also my gallery stopped working.

Any ideas on why? Again Thanks a lot for you help

These instructions are helpful I am about to do this for an Intranet - just a query about the instruction in terms of http-alias. All servers are on one Domain with AD running

The original was created and accessed on the development server http://ccddev/caos (added as alais to http://localhost/caos original).CASO is a virtual directory. I have full access to ccddev but only Front Page Access to the production server

The new production address will be http://sthnet/anaesthesia_pub/caos where http://sthnet/anaesthesia_pub is a Front Page Web and the /caos is a virtual directory that I make from within FrontPage.

When I copy across the files from the caos development VD to the new VD what changes do I need to make to get the web to open with the new url. I cannot log-in as local host to the new server - will I need to make a change directly in the table to add the new alias?

many thanks

You can either add the alias before you copy it over, or you can change it directly in the database.  Your call.
