how can i increase the speed and performance of a dnn website??

One of My Main Suggestions would be synapsis Pageblaster. The performance difference after installing this module is tangible. A free version is available here http://www.snapsis.com/PageBlaster-Community-Edition.aspx

Are you referring to initial load time of the first page (after some time of inactivity), this can be optimized by tweaking recycle settings of the app pool. For optimizing load time of subsequent pages, use caching and complession settings in Host menu, usually you start with an analysis of the cause for performance issues, i.e. large images, module cache time etc.
