Now, this is my oppinion, but I definately would agree that a build or release should not be held up because Shaun Walker, the benevolant dictator of DotNetNuke, happens to not be available.  Sure, that's important stuff, but executives and figureheads shouldn't be writing, deploying, or managing software - they should be being executives and figureheads.

Some people may be curious why I have remained silent on this thread so far. Ironically, the reason is precisely what Tony has identified above. As an executive of DotNetNuke Corporation, it is my responsibility to focus on those items which have strategic value to the project. Lately this means focussing on building a sustainable business model, obtaining funding, managing business relationships with our partners, product management, and leveraging my technical skills to solve some of the more complex problems in the platform ( ie. caching errors in high traffic environments ) . Getting involved in inflammatory conversations on the public forum is not strategically aligned with my role; therefore, I delegate the communications responsibility to others such as Joe to represent the DNN Corp perspective on the issue. I am not sure how Tony Valenti has so much time to contribute to threads like this... but perhaps there are other more business focussed executives at PowerDNN whom he relies on to run his business. I personally would not feel comfortable with this scenario, and I know my business partners would not feel comfortable with me spending an in ordinate amount of time in this channel. That being said, although I do not spend my time posting, I do invest the time in constantly reading the feedback so that I can stay in touch with the concerns of the community. There are many items in this particular thread which I found to be constructive, and you can rest assured we are always looking for solutions. In many cases, there are plenty of additional constraints to consider, but fundamentally we recognize that the community feedback loop is vital to the success of the platform so please keep the positive suggestions flowing.

Shaun,

I appreciate your time, but could you respond to my original post. Aren't you personally embarrassed by the fact that the forums have this glaring CSS issue in FireFox? Isn't this the type of thing that can make a good product look stupid even while it is functionally no big deal?

BTW: The built-in spell check doesn't work and FireFox's spell check won't work in here either. These are things I just take for granted on most sites.

That's why I'm saying. Do something about the black eye. Anyone got a DNN size raw steak handy?

Sorry to have stirred up a horent's nest with Tony.

More power to ya!

Andrew,

Although I'm not Shaun I thought I would respond with my personal opinion on your most recent post.  These are just my opinions, and are nothing more than that.

I agree that the CSS issue is an annoyance, but many sites have "quirks" in different browsers.  In fact my local TV stations, and schools have CSS quirks that affect certain browsers.  Yes it is an issue, yes it needs to be resolved, but it does NOT impact functionality.  I personally would say that the forums e-mail notifications, and other issues are WELL past the CSS issue in priority, AND visibility.  A community forum site that doesn't update individuals on the content that they wished to be updated on, is not a community site that people will want to return to, thus in my opinion a much bigger, visible, black eye.

The errors with the editor are a third party providers issue.  The TextEditor control utilizes the FCK editor, that editor has its own set of known issues that impact its functionality.  Personally aside from trying to find ANOTHER third party solution for the editor, this one is a bit hard to resolve.  I personally am about to resolve it on my sites by using the RadEditor from Telerik, but that is NOT an option for widespread DotNetNuke distribution due to licensing requirements.

I guess my point is yes, there are issues, but really in the grand scheme of things, there are bigger fish to fry than an CSS error, and other items.  Prioritization is the key to getting the issues resolved in the proper order.

I would be happy to answer your question. I am not personally embarrassed by the Forums issue because I am intimately aware of the amount of time and effort which Chris Paterra has invested in making the Forums module what it is today. It has involved tremendous self-sacrifice and I am grateful for his contribution to the project and community. Chris is aware of the Forums issue and since he is the Project Leader, I am relying on his judgement and insight on how to best resolve the problem.

I'd just to add a comment that I'm sure people are free to "express an interest" and (ideally) post a definative solution/ by commenting in FOR-7937  (in Gemini) which I stated earlier in this thread.
