I've been getting a lot more freeze-ups since 4.8.x and now still in 4.9.0

I don't get any related eventlog errors and it always tends to be when the portal is restarting. This is commonly occuring during language edits and I've stopped all language edits by admins because of the risk of freezing things up when I'm not around to recycle the pool manually.

It also happens now and then if I use the restart link in Host Settings. And it also happens sometimes after module installs, again it's during the application restart phase that it just hangs.

It is definitely more prevelant now than in the many previous builds this portal has been through. I've checked through the event queue for fails, but it's all clear.

Running 4.9.0 on  IIS6, SQL2005, and I clear all logs out daily. The db is only 65mb for 30 portals.

I am not aware of changes in DNN 4.8.x/4.9.0 having a negative effect on performance. are there specific actions causing lengthly actions? did you clear Eventlog, Sitelog and Scheduler history, verify scheduler tasks not to run prior to previos execution finished and verify the transaction log of the database to be truncated frequently?

Hi Sebastian, thanks for your help. In regards to your questions the transaction log of the database is truncated frequently, not using the Sitelog, and I always clear the Eventlog and Scheduler history about once a month so I do not think those are the problem. However I have done a bit more testing on one of the installs with timeout problems and for some reason it seems since upgrading to 4.9.0 DNN takes ages to start or load after a recycle (around 3 minutes) which it did not before the upgrade. When the website is requested during the 3 minutes of startup time a bunch of timeout errors occur (and sometimes System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted. errors) in the log and then once loaded the site works perfectly. Don't know if this helps or not but it seems to be the cause of my timeout problems. As already mentioned I have turned off application recycling for now but do you have any idea why DNN takes so long to load since upgrading to 4.9.0?

Hey Robax,

I'm almost wondering if this could be something that is a DNN and OS conflict.  I'm just pulling ideas out of the air, but, for example, language editing opens files and it is possible that there is an OS level file lock contention.  Are you able to make it freeze on command?  If so, do you have the ability to profile the website ( http://www.jetbrains.com/profiler/download/ ), make it freeze, and then post the "hot spots" here?

I'm very interested to see what's going on with the site.

Hi Chris,

I hace not encountered this behaviour in any of our upgraded or newly installed portals, is there anything special with your installation?

Hi Sebastian thanks for your help. The only thing special I can think of is that both of the installs/sites are on Windows 2003 64-bit servers (2 different MaximumASP VPS's). Are others having this problem on 32-bit or 64-bit servers?
