Well, this is it for dnn and me.  It started as a nice idea way back, and I'd put it in place in a few companies with very limited needs over the past year... but it's the same BIG problem of most all "open source" products and non-profit ventures.  Lots of meetings, lots of high hopes, lots and lots of talk but major devils in the released details.

For products to be trusted, I've come to the sad realization that they really do need to be Commercial projects with people getting paid to get things done - and fired/replaced immediately when they don't.

Nice that the Worthey family had a baby, and neato-keen that you are going to Vegas to show everyone how to make a membership provider in 60 minutes.  However, the blog module being in the release tracker "so close can you taste it" for so long now is the killer here.  It makes the whole DNN system look untrustworthy and the other unrelated little things elsewhere that we all just kinda work around start just eating at us as more signs of a rickety system.

Good luck with DNN everyone.  I think just going back to directly coding ASP.Net and throwing in commercial components where needed is a better idea for folks who have any programming background.  DNN is fine as a replacement for FrontPage but if our customers need something real then it appears that "Free" just isn't cost effective.

:(

With greatest respect smithv I find this very strange indeed that this is your first and only post.

"With greatest respect smithv I find this very strange indeed that this is your first and only post."

With all due respect, what has post count got to do with the fact that the blog module has been "So close can you taste it" since Antonio Chagoury listed it as such on 7/21/2008 at 9:58 PM and seemingly dead since then?

Rather than being a post-happy fanboy I have bought and used all of the books, have implemented DNN a few times now with extensions to match needs. I've tried my best to get things done on my own while trusting the DNN Official devs to get *their* parts done too.

Plese understand this:

Had that July 21st announcement NOT been made then I probably would not have been so annoyed, having instead taken DNN for what it was (and still is).  But because Antonio *DID* make a public announcement and because 3 months HAVE gone by without any obvious work being done, well... I thought it was worth posting in hopes that my post would possibly spur Antonio into seeing that it was worth getting back on the stick.

Apparently it was not.  As the previous poster said, if DNN is opensource then just give people who need bog functionality the source.  If not then PLEASE Stop making announcements until you have code ready to show proof that it's not just vapour.  And I think it best to make a blog post now to say that the previous announcement was premature and that there is no real blog update after all.

Post count has nothing to do with useage.

I see the issues (beyond the fair point WRT source) as two-fold:

  1. Why does something as small as the issue that blocked release get to not only block it... but also derail release of something "so close" to derailed?
  2. Why no communication on status and at least some statement about plans for a fix and resubmit?

I'm a huge fan of DNN. I advocate it professionally and personally. I'm not interested in slinging mud nor am I interested in chastizing people that volunteer their time to build something for free that I can use for captial gain. Seriously - I'm a supporter and will continue to be. However, these curious aspects of "the process" chip away at confidence. And, as an adjunct to "smith's" comment.... I've stalled a portion of a personal project since July 21st because I thought "I could taste it" too and it looked to be worth reprioritizing for. (professionally, long ago my team chose to integrate subtext instead because of features...)

Project contributors: I sincerely appreciate that you do work that we all benefit from, all in the name of community. I (and it sounds like others) just need for you to be direct about where things stand and what's realistic to expect. We're big boys and girls - we can take it. It's just better to have predictability and make decisions from there. Also - could you please provide feedback into improving the release process? How this got sideways with the issue stated (not to mention took so long because someone was on vacation... i.e. aren't there alternate testing resources? If not - let's recruit them) and so much time has passed is bizarre.

People, for better or worse and because of the platform DNN has become, have begun to make business decisions based on what happens with these projects so please realize that communicating often and transparently matters. To date, your communications have been great and forum responsiveness remarkable (trust me - there are other projects that should be declared dead due to lack of responsiveness...). Your updates - about what's happening, what to expect, when, where, and how, are needed.

Also - why not just expand the beta for this? I see that most of the project contributors seem to trust the code for personal blogs. Why not let us run it knowing that it's... well... beta if source isn't an option?

Best regards,
-Jeff

Jeff,

I agree that we need to work with the realease process to refine it more, and I hope that we can get a better handle on it in the very near future.  Being a project lead myself (over the documents module), I know how frustrating it is with the release process and communication.  It is done in the best efforts to provider a quality release in the end.  However, with lacking commuincation, and the overall time spent, many people consider it to be a detractor rather than a benefit, this is a fundamental problem that I'm sure is being worked on.

As for the beta's, I know in the past they have been allowed, but I believe it is the project leads decision, hopefully someone from the blog team can chime in.

Jeff,

I have to take off responsibility for the delay from the project team. After the issues mentioned before has been notified to the Blog team, the issues had been fixed quickly and the module resubmitted to the release process, you can follow the progress on this page. Unfortunately, another tester performed the functional tests (it was me) in a slightly different way then before and discpvered some more issues. When the Blog team lead has been informed about these issues, he decided to fix them before the release and the module was failed. Unfortunately, the poject team is currently blocked from making any changes by another core team member and unable to proceed, I feel real sorry for this and am trying to get this solved asap.

Cheers from Germany,
