When I add default.aspx to the url, I get redirected to my localhost/default.aspx on my pc.

Sounds like you're on the right track.  If you uploaded your local database to the new server, then the PortalAliases will be incorrect and you'll need to modify them manually.  If this is a brand new installation, then I would not expect the localhost redirection.

Do I need to run the source package, or will the startup version work?

Use the install package.  Only use the source package if you have a very specific need to do so.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!  That was the problem.  Once I changed the Portal Aliases it worked like a charm!
