DNN comes with the appropriate project files for Visual Studio 2005 and 2008. If you don't have VS you can download the express version and do some development, though I prefer doing WAP Web Application Project development which I believe requires the full versions of VS. WAP allows for individual projects for module development, where using express (try the starter kit version of DNN) you build the module within the website, not as a seperate project.

thanks for the reply chris.  maybe i'm not speaking the correct 'lingo.'  sorry if that's the case.  i'm looking for a 'test' environment that my clients can preview before the site goes live.  however, i would like it to be viewable online.  usually, i would create a 'dev' folder on the root and put all my working files in that.  once they approve the design, i move everything to the root.  is there such a way to do this in dnn?

if you need a staging installation of the final site, you need to create a second installation, e.g. "Stage.mydomain.com" on the same server and you will be able to easily switch between both installation (if there is no user content to maintain). If you need a demo portal to present your own modules and skins, a test installation with multiple child portals on your own site may be sufficient.
