Depending on the specific needs, I'll recommend one of three options, all of which I have worked with in the past.

1. Shared Hosting - you can't beat 3Essentials for performance, support and cost.  They are great, and with Plesk you can setup multiple clients on a single reseller account with ease.  (Referral link in my signature)

2. VPS Hosting - Contrary to what is mentioned earlier in this thread I've found that a VPS server is a very viable option for some hosting scenarios.  All of my sites are actually hosted on a VPS account with HostMySite.com and I have NO issues at all!

3. Dedicated Server - If you want full control, and responsibility, then this is the route to go.  It will be expensive, but in the end it typically pays off.  I strongly recommend RackSpace for this, as their support is awesome.

Overall it really depends on what you are doing, what your expectations are, and what level of client support you need when hosting your client sites!  Drop me an e-mail if you want to discuss directly msellers@iowacomputergurus.com

Regarding VPS, I also have had no problems and I think it is an excellent approach at a great price.  I have been using VPS with FullControl.net for over two years and I have been very happy with the performance and their customer service.  It depends on your needs, but I like being able to access the server with remote desktop, work diretely with IIS, databases, or other software that I choose to install.  The SmaterTools apps that come with a VPS account are also very sweet.    www.fullcontrol.net

Full Disclusure is that I work for Re-invent:

Just to clear up a misstatement and clarify a couple of points.   We do fully allow remote access to their customer database using any SQL compatible client tool.  The user would have full remote DBO user access. We do not allow system admin access to our database servers.

We do charge a fee for adding domain pointers which is $15 each.. With DNN this is like hosting seperate web sites for a one-time fee of $15 for each site as DNN allows seperate parent portals each with their own domain name. We do not have a limit on how many pointers they can add.

We do charge a fee of $15 if the customer requires us to upgrade their DNN site.  We also provide instructions to the customer on how to do this themselves if they choose.

Backup Services: We offer 2 weeks of data backups and offer free restores of those backups using our Enterprise Solution at anytime and all is offered for FREE.  We can restore your database and DNN site back to what it was 2 weks ago without charge.  Customer may have been charged a $15 fee for requesting an off-site backup set be copied to their FTP Site manually by us some time ago.  This is no longer a fee.

This customer requested and approved through tickets several domain pointers and a couple of DNN upgrades over the last quarter, so none of these were hidden fees or should have been a surprise.  We also sent at several times to the customer receipts of these transactions.
