I thought Switzerland was run by the bankers? Then again, since the 5 trillion bailout (no it's not 700 billion/1 trillion that has been reported) you could argue the US is getting that way as well. That money is being given away by unelected officials, and is subject to a "no review" policy by act of congress, which means they can give away money to anyone without question. Is that considered constitutional ?

Heck we gave away enough money here in the UK as well which went straight into Goldman Sacks bonuses, so who is running our country?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1081624/Goldman-Sachs-ready-hand-7BILLION-salary-bonus-package--6bn-bail-out.html

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/financialcrisis/3276185/Goldman-ordered-to-justify-billion-dollar-bonus-pot.html

The money is simply just going to the elite, they are sucking us dry... in the meantime they are repossessing our houses and small businesses, and we the public sit back and let them....

Something has got to change!

I think Peter and Stuart's video / picture blog about life / politics / etc. where you live is a very cool idea. Reading some of these posts makes me wonder if we all suffer from a "Grass is greener" mentality. I've always thought that Switzerland did many things right. From what I understand crime is very low there. Aren't all males required to serve in the military for something like two years?  I'd also heard that most all families there have guns in their homes.

One of my perceptions from my travels in Europe is that when European's come to the US a very large number of them either go to New York or Las Vegas. I've always wondered what kind of perception people would have of us if all they knew about the US came from the media and trips to those two cities. Kind of goes along with Scott & John's "American Idol" views. Living your life mortgaging yourself to the limit so that you can try to emulate the lastest movie start doesn't make a lot of sense to me but sadly I believe that is how many in the US live.

I have learned one thing from this thread - Sad Duck lives in Indiana!

Alex-  With regards to the media I learned back when the "war" (can't call it a war - war was never declared) was going on that the media in the UK is more free than in the US. I read stories during that time in UK sources that didn't come out over here for like two years. And some of them never came out over here.

Reporters Without Borders, a reporter's trade group, rates every country each year for freedom of the press. In 2005 the US ranked 25th in the world. In 2008 it ranked 48th in the world. Quite a bit different than what I was taught in grade school!!!!

Absolutely, when I'm in the US (I haven't has been for a while now which is unfortunate) I notice most of my friends are watching BBC on cable because they don't trust the other networks. A friend in NYC watches BBC world/America (which is censored to a limited extent I think), but he told me yesterday that it suddenly stopped transmitting last week! Conspiracy?

BBC is not without it's problems and biases though, but I have to admit I am simply amazed at what the US mainstream reporting gets away with... Mind you we have our own Fox style TV called Sky News.
