Thanks for you comment, Bill.  Now I am more confused than before!  <g>

I have two installations of 4.9.1.  For one site, the upgrade from 4.9.0 to 4.9.1 was uneventful.  The upgrade was fine.  I just copied the upgrade files over my existing site, browsed to install/install.aspx and watched the upgrade happen.  For that site, the buildproviders section of the web.config after the upgrade looks like this:

      < buildProviders >
        < remove extension=".resx" / >
        < remove extension=".resources" / >
      < /buildProviders >

For the second site, and as noted in the first message in this thread, I had a problem and had to remove the German resx file from the install/App_Code directory to get the upgrade to work.

After the upgrade, the buildProviders section of web.config has the two lines commented out:

      < buildProviders >
        < !--
        < remove extension=".resx" / >
        < remove extension=".resources" / >
        -- >
      < /buildProviders >

The site runs fine, as near as I can tell, except that I get that error regarding a resx file when trying to view the Host Settings page.  I don't get errors going to other Host or Admin pages, and no problems going to other pages on the site.

I tried removing the comments in the web.config (I assume that's what you meant by re-enableing the built-in handling of resource files(, but that didn't work.  I couldn't even get to the site, as there were then compilation errors.

Got any other ideas?  Or did I misinterpret something?  And thanks!

Maybe I just needed to read a bit more carefully.

I did 2 things:

  1. Added the "resheaders" to the admin/host/App_LocalResources/solutions.ascs.resx file.
  2. Put the "remove extension-".resx" back into web.config.

I now can get to the Host Settings page.

So, I thank you for pointing me to Brandon's blog entries.  Brandon - if you're listening, I thank you, too!

Then again, maybe not.

I swear it was working.  I restarted IIS and now it isn't working ...

Joe, there couple of resource files included in the DNN distribution (and a bunch more with third party lang packs) who do not adhere to the resx file format because they are not intended for compilation. Either do not compile resx files as in original web.config or follow the approach of Brandon Hayes, mentioned in a previous thread.

Thanks for your encouragement, Sebastian!

Things always look better in the morning.  So, fortified by a good night's sleep, I downloaded Brandon's code, copied it into my bin folder and made the web.config changes.  Everything now works!  (I had to put back an original copy of solutions.ascx.resx, too.)

Now ... I still don't understand why one 4.9.1 installationneeds this, and the other doesn't.  Any ideas -- I'm just curious.
