K so day three playing with DNN. more questions hope to find quick answers and first let me say thanks.  Next my rant... I went over to traincert spent $19 bucks to view there video which was a complete wast of resources.  The videos are way outdated, and I don't know what interface they've were operating from but they made it look easy, expecially the part where they changed modules on DNN434_4_Module_Development_VWD_Express.wmv.  Problem  is I could not find the where to select a module like he did in the video with that simple drop down list.  Questions what is the difference between modules, skins and, containers?  Do you have sample walk throughs preferably videos that can get me started quickly.  The Instructional videos should provide instructions using starting from the same user interface that is installed by default and go from there.   Last,  I'm confused about what the diferrence is between and the purpose of Modules, Skins and containers.  How do they apply to each other?  I'm thinking that Modules go in side of skins..., but containers... What version of DNN would you recommend for a user like me?

Thanks

containers are part of the design of the site, they complement the skin. Normally there is a container around a module instance that you have placed in a pane on a page.

modules are specific pieces of functionality, you add them to a page, e.g. you add a blog module to the page onto which you want to maintain your blog. or you add an announcement module to your news page, everytime you have some news you add an announcement in this announcement moduleTip:

Tip: You could buy yourself a book, on the homepage you see some listed. You could try DNN for dummies (no offence ment)

Thanks, no offence taken.  I will pick up one of those books soon I've actually already tried to look at the one for DNN 5.0 but Amazon says it has not be released yet (let me know if I'm doing something wrong).  Anyway.  I am a .Net developer in C# and VB and have been developing CMS type website for quite a few years.  Been in the business for 11+.  These days I'm not into having to throwing down alot of coding to develop and App and I don't go out of my way to complicate software development process, In my position my job is quite the opposite.  As a lead architect and developer when you talk to your team It's a .Net control but When you talk to marketing it probably should just be refered to as a part of the website.  I hope for some help making that kind of co-relation.  For a person like me to make the transition it sound something like a container is a .Net control that is responsible for the overall layout of the page.  Is that correct.  Anyway the question in my mind,  is DNN more effective than continuing develop CMS' from scratch?  So am I understanding you correctly DNN 5.x doesn not come with any containers or skins but 4.9.1 does or....  why 4.9.1?

OK dnn has two faces:

  1. cms for websites
  2. web application framework to build your own web apps with. You can leverage dnn security, skin engine, etc.

Lots of out of the box functionalty which you can tweak, so don't need to start from scratch.

dnn 491 like dnn 500 comes with one standard skin (containers can be seen as part of the skin structure). Both skin and containers files are user controls.

Why 491: more stable, more documentation you can relate to.

SEAN - Peter has is right.  The Lay-Man's of this is as follows:

  1. DNN (DotNetNuke) is a framework, like the human skeleton.
  2. SKINS, like your own skin, is the "look" of the framework.
  3. CONTAINERS sit in the (X)HTML layout of the Skin (as part of the Skin)
  4. MODULES reside inside containers.
    1. When you add a Module to a page (using the Control Panel), DNN automatically inserts it onto the page, inside a container.
    2. You can choose your container by going into Module Settings

Again, like Peter says, its always best to start at the beginning.  Download the Skinning Guides, Help Files, look through other people's Forum Posts - You'll always bound to find the answer.  The good thing to know is that you're looking at the very best Open Source ASP.NET application framework in the world, with more than half a million registered users who are willing to help and share.
