I just thought I would note my recent experiences.

The original site was DNN 4.4.1

The first thing I tried was to upgrade directly to DNN 5.0.0, When I did this I and the upgrade log said that everything had gone correctly.  I got an 'unable to load v13wstat3' error when I logged in.  Also my existing solpartmenu in the old skin was missing as soon as I logged in (therefore I had no way to alter the skin).  I manually changed the menu in the skin to that of the minimalextorpy skin but had limited success.  For instance, I now saw the host menu but no submenus underneath it.

Back to the drawing board.

I restored the filesystem and database, and upgraded to 4.9.1.  This time the menu worked and there were no v13wstat3 errors.  So silly me I attempted to go from 4.9.1 to 5.0.0.

This time the menu worked, as did the rest of the legacy skin.  However, there were a couple of other things that I now noticed

The host and admin menus are all missing their icons.

The different sections of the admin/host settings pages are inaccessible. I get an popup that states something along the lines of "Sys.webforms.pagerequestmanagerservererrorexception: an unknown error has occurred (500)"

The portalalias module on the admin settings page is broken (incorrect path).  **I saw the bug late this afternoon and simply removed the module.

I then noticed when I toggled the control panel or the view mode for the page I get an "failed to load v13wstat3: the control tree must match..." message.

Oh yes, I almost forgot when did the layout of the listentryinfocollection change?  I noticed that in a custom module the country/region drop-downs no longer interacted correctly because the "Value" field had change formats.

Tomorrow I think I will try to simply go to 4.9.1 and see what happens...

Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions,

Steve

A lot of 5.0.0 has been discussed before here (search forums), and a lot of the issues have been fixed for 5.0.1

To save hassle and have an easier life all round I would strongly recommend waiting for 5.0.1 and see what happens then.

I have reverted to 4.4.1 and upgraded to 4.9.1, and everything works without a hitch.

I will avoid 5.0.0 and wait until 5.0.1.

Is there away to remove "5.0.0" label from the top of the control panel to prevent less cautious users from mistakenly blowing up their site.  If so I suggest it.

Does anyone know when the format of the listentryinfo "Key" field changed?

I just spent the afternoon yesterday tracking down all the custom modules that use the built-in dnn lists and modifying them to function with the new format.
