I would also like to register my dissatsfaction and disappointment with the DNN Forums module.  At a time when I am trying to prod my organization to add more community interaction to its Web site, I am only now beginning to discover how inadequate the Forums module is to serve as the centerpiece of that strategy.  I have been repeatedly promoting the benefits of the Forum module features, most importantly Notification, only to learn to my embarrassment that these features are not reliable.

Now I may have to explain to the "Money People" why we need to buy a new message board product, like Active Forums, so that we can have the abilities I've been saying we already have.  They aren't going to understand that the Forums module is buggy.  They're going to think it's my fault that I can't get it working right.  I've staked a fair chunk of my reputation on DotNetNuke and its core modules, as have many of you -- and the DotNetNuke Corporation is not doing all it should be to help me succeed in my work.

If the DotNetNuke Corporation has abandoned the Forums module -- and by appearances, it has -- then it should have the courtesy to announce this, in the form of a statement that I can show to my superiors to help me explain why we need to abandon the module and purchase something else.

I feel much like Mike, and DNN Core Forums Module should not be claiming notifications as a feature when it simply doesn't work for most.

I think he also hits on a key word here - courtesy.

For a good year now I've seen new versions coming close to release, and like others am simply hoping to see the bug fixes as a priority and not enhancements (nice but hey - a year on???).

To me it's just not common courtesy to say a release should be soon and then go quiet when a release is not soon.  It's just courteous to maintain some level of communication and not leave so many of us hanging... out to dry.

I really don't have much else to add that I've not already said in the last 10 months - I think it all falls on deaf ears.

I've also staked a lot of my rep in DNN; I work for a large company with 30000 registered users on my internal site and our portals have come to a halt due this error

Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Modules.Forum.ForumUserController.FillForumUserInfo

I'm a big advocate for open-source but I had to make a tough call and move the main portal to Sharepoint to make it usable. I still have several other portals that I'm trying to hang on to in DNN but the pressure to get this resolved is on. I really hope we have some sort of point release soon, as I cant even access the edit screen for any forum on any portal without this error being thrown.

You know, for what it's worth, I figured I'd post this for thos of us who can't wait any longer.

There is a free alternative that I have been testing and works like a champ with one issue that I ran into.  Check out "YetAnotherForum" - http://yetanotherforum.net - this is an ASP.NET forum software and it's free.  There is a DNN PA Connector that is also available.  I have setup and tested, and am currently running the software on my sites with no problems that I can think of.  The installation was simple and worked with no issues.  The software runs well, is able to use DNNs internal userbase, and again seems to run quite well.  The ONLY show stopper I've run into is that the software uses it's own URL rewriter for SEO links, but when running under DNN the rewriting is not available.  There is a conflict with the two rewriters which causes the YAF one to not work.  So if you're not needing SEO links that bad, you should check the forum code out.  We're running it, and to be honest, it was worth every minute of time to setup and get running.

Sorry to throw a bust in the DNN Forum progress, but like many have said - with the major features that didn't work prior to this still waited on release, combined with the fact there is no light at the end of the tunnel for a working version, I felt best to let others know of the solution I found.  Who knows, maybe with a little more polish on the DNN PA Connector they are working on, there is possibility of a full-featured system available for free.

Good luck with the core development.  In the meantime, we'll stick with YAF on our end --

I raised this with Scott in team chat yesterday and expressed concern that the community needs to know more here. He said he is STILL in communication with the team lead and testing is still ongoing. It appears the team lead is very very busy... Sorry I can't provide any more info than that.
