I guess I'm a little confused.  Since I'm using an extranet, users will not be previously authenticated.  The reason users are domain users is because we want to have SSO between Exchange & DNN (less passwords for users, central management for us).

So, if an extranet user logs in and is prompted for a password, the password they enter is not sent to the server in cleartext?

An extranet user logs in via the normal login object where they choose between Standard and Windows Login correct? If that's the case then WindowsSignin.aspx isn't even looked at as it's a separate procedure. WindowsSignin.ascx is just used for automatic logins when the user is on the intranet as long as you've set the auto-login IP in the settings to only autologin the intranet address range. If they're logging in via the IIS popup...... I'm not sure if that's automatically encrypted or not. When users enter their credentials into that pop-up I believe that they are authenticated against the domain and then (if they pass) they're forwarded to the page (WindowsSignin.aspx) in question.

Mike:

Thanks for all the help.  Because I'm dealing with a largely older and computer illiterate crowd, I'm linking to WindowsSignin.aspx to reduce confusion.  Trust me when I say that clicking "Windows Authentication" and entering in their information would be extremely confusing.

So, to answer the question: when I use a link to WindowsSignin.aspx the users are double prompted for a username and password (when my setup is as described in the accepted solution).

Ah so they're getting a double IIS window pop-up then correct? If that is the case then I would check to see if having https on there is necessary or not. Like I said in my previous post, I don't know if credentials entered into the IIS popup are encrypted automatically or not. For all I know even having the page secure (https) may not be making a difference as the authentication happens before the page is called.

I'll have to see if I can get a temporary SSL certificate so that I can test this to see exactly what happens.

Yes! That's absolutely correct - sorry if this wasn't clear before.

One of the popups is for http the other is for https.  I'm about 95% certain that entering information in the IIS prompt sends the response back in cleartext (as opposed to a hashed or mangled value of some sort).

Also, as for SSL certs: I just use self-signed until I'm ready to go live.  I use the tool out of the IIS6 Resource Kit to generate them.
