Hi,

My site is currently running 4.8.2 and I have been upgrading it regularly but the last upgrade to 4.8.2 was just a nightmare to get it work so I am really reluctant to go ahead with the upgrade.

Has anyone done upgrades from 4.8.2 to 4.9.1 or to 5.0 ? any comments, suggestions are welcome. I do want to upgrade but I am just scared and don't want to loose my site as I have put in good amount of time in it and would hate it if the site doesn't upgrade successfully.

Thanks,
Vishal

upgrade to DNN 4.9.1 from DNN 4.8.x shall be easy:

  • backup files and database
  • unzip DNN 4.9.1 upgrade package hierarchical into the DNN install folder, overwriting existing files
  • browse to your site. if you did set autoupgrade to false, you need to browse /install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade

ALWAYS make a backup of your web directory and your database before doing any upgrade ... or other major work on your site.  Some would suggest making several backup copies, just to make sure that you'll have a good one.

If you do that, you will be able to restore your site if something goes wrong.

You can also use your backup copies to create a second (localhost?) installation.  Then do the upgrade to that copy.  When you have verified the upgrade, make backup copies, and use those to upgrade the live site.
