how much RAM do you provide for your SQL server. The machine should have reserved at least 1 GB for the SQL server.

Hi Sabastian

Thanks for the reply.  We're running Forum  4.04.03 on DNN 4.9.2 using IIS 6.0 on Windows 2003 R2 x64 with 8GB of RAM.  We have not placed any memory limits on the SQL Server.  The DB size is approx 150MB.  Typically, during normal webserver user traffic the available memory is generally around 6-6.5GB and the sql process runs at 300MB.

Any suggestions are appreciated,

For reindexing on express edition you have to set the database offline and restart it.  Re-indexing by script is not supported from the express versions.

Hi Matthias

Thanks for your suggestion.  We have completed several cycles of  'take-the-database-offline' and restarting it.  The Indexes remain reported by SQL as "Operation Recommended  - Rebuild"    The fragmentation remains unchanged.  Thanks for your insight on sql 2008 express failures during scripting, I've reached out with a post on MSDN SQL Forum regarding the scripting of Index reorganize/rebuild to explore any available remedy.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Update:

The limitation for Express with running ReOrganize or Rebuild, the SQL Express series don't have SQL Agents.  We've used scheduled command line scripting in our maintenance of SQL 2008 Express.

What may be of interest to other SQL Express users is a Standalone SQL Agent(beta)  http://standalonesqlagent.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=22888
