Hi Guys...

What is a good cost effective host for DNN? These guys look good http://www.infosaic.com/products.aspx primarily because they allow the use of a SQL 2005 Express database. In fact if I have calculated corrected then its only $60 per year to host DNN.

Has anyone used them? Are they reliable? Or is there a better host out there?

Interested in your opinions on all any hosts...

Dale

Hi Dale -

This is a very subjective post. I think you will a variance of opinions in many areas. Have you looked in our hosting directory to see who's there and if there are any comments left?

I used to think I knew who was good at hosting, but in two minds these days and because I manage my own servers, I see first hand what they have to go through and at times, there are some challenges hosting DNN sites, and regardless of what my thoughts are, I'm of the opinion that you get what you pay for overall.

It also depends on your requirements doesn't it. EG - if you are testing a site and want somewhere to try it, then cheap is OK becuase it's not critical.

If you or your clients depend on the site being up and running, then I think you need to give some thought in how much support is required, how much down time can you live with and what level of tech support is enough for you to live with.

I see so many people here thinking that because DNN is free to download, it should be free to host, or nearly free but in my opinion, and it's only my opinion ok, I have more maintenance making sure my server is running that I ever had before and it has more overhead to run properly than some other applications.

Having said that, you can also be lucky and be on a server that's not got many clients on it, and it runs like the wind, but once you hit that magic number of .. how many sites on a DNN server limit, it's a management nightmare.

These are just my opinions..

And.. as a friend used to say to his clients - You can have it Good, Fast or Cheap.  Which 2 do you want?

We've used www.northcomp.com for years.  Eric owns the company, is a guy that wrote a book on ASP.NET, so he's technical, and he answers the phone himself--24/7.  I've never not had him get back to me if he didn't answer the phone, within an hour or so...and that's rare.

He has some good deals on virtual servers too.  Yes, he does offer commissions, but I refuse them first of all, and since you don't know who I am, how could he give it to me?   I always prefer a small shop with a guy who's technical to deal with--none of these 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.. lines of 'support', which invariably means you end up w/someone that knows nothing the first two or 3 people you talk to.

Definitely check it out.  See for yerself.  We've had a number of DNN 2 and 3 sites that he's been helpful on...

Another thing to think about is your own capabilities.  If you have the technical know how you can get a host that only provides high level support. At the other end of the scale if you have no/little technical/coding know how but just want to use the DNN interface you should look for a host that has experience with DNN and can provide the 'backend' support.

My 2 cents
