People offering paid support and who are organised often have their own internal knowledge base that just builds up over time with every issue that is dealt with. I really don't see anything wrong with serving paying customers to the best of ones ability.

In addition there is actually a knowledge base online for everybody to see, it's called support.dotnetnuke.com. Yes sure the UI/search/speed is quirky but hopefully something be done about that... soon I hope.

And this being open source, there is nothing to stop people from compiling their own knowledge bases.

So on the whole what is the issue?

Personally, I find my knowledge base to be the forums here on the DNN site.  Rest assured, if there is a problem, it will be here somewhere.  That is, unless you're the first person to encounter it.  ;)

I usually just use Google, and search the DNN site for an issue or error I am looking for.  For example, if I am experiencing an error with the following text:

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Page cannot be null.

I wil go to Google, and enter that error into the search box, using quotes.  Then append the site parameter to make sure I only get the DNN site.

"DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Page cannot be null." site:dotnetnuke.com

This solution has the added benefit of also having the blogs show up, as the blogs will sometimes outline solutions to errors and other problems.

That being said, you already have the best knowledge base at your finger tips.  I think if we just be a little more patient, all will pan out just fine.  Not just for the DNN Corp, but also for the DNN community.

I know we do not have a whole lot of public information to point you to that will support my suggestion.  However, that is mostly the fault of the DNN Corp being on new ground.  We are all guilty of making mistakes when we begin doing something that we never have done before.  How we rebound from those mistakes is what determines our worth.  In the case of the DNN Corp, it is more than just a couple of people making decisions now.  So their reaction time has slowed, which is something we are simply not used to.

I know how you feel.  So I ask you just to give this a little more time.  We will see a lot more information come our way in the next month that will address all of our concerns.

Alex,

So on the whole what is the issue?

I'd say for some the statement that was referenced implies that documentation for the CE version is going to be somewhat less than 'comprehensive'.  As I've said before, it's not the path I believe the CT or DNN Core Team would be headed, but it's this marketing of the PE version that is creating such tremors. I know Scott and Shaun have always given straight info.  I wouldn't continue to use DNN, if I didn't believe in their effort to bring DNN to bigger and better levels.

We all know that Documentation is the last thing to be done, because it takes a lot of time to do it well.  In fact, just when you think it's ready for release, something's already changed.  I applaud the effort to step up the chore with more professional resources, but it would be nice to see that the CE version has up-to-date doc with a release, and not references that are out of date.  Yes it takes resources, but there are a lot of folks that are more inclined to offer their help for pay, and that's the fact of the matter.  No skin off my teeth that folks can pull it off either.  It's business and a valid approach.  In the end, it's all about trying to keep paying the bills, so is getting paid is beginning to take a front seat to 'giving' it away? Don't think so.

I still have faith in the DNN Community to help keep Open Source support alive and well, using the Forums, and outside blogs to help fill in the gaps between paid services. For me, it's just a concern, nothing more, but certainly nothing less.

Frankly, I'm not going to respond to posts about PE vs CE anymore, as I think it's not useful.  We knew that DNN Corp was going to be offering products and services, and I'm glad they've got it going.  You go!!! DNN Corps, wish I was up there with you. The CE version can only benefit from what I see.

Phil,

please accept my assurance, that documentation has not been suppressed by DNN Corp. to benefit PE. I am very unhappy as well, that we haven't made progress in this area over the past two years - there has been formed a documentation project, but it is struggling with technical issues. I agree, that documentation is necessary but I agree as well, that for a cummunity edition this should be contributed by the community (including most of the core team members, who are not involved in DNN Corp. and PE) and I expect additional initiatives will be raised in the future, I will do my best to contribute for any DNN Community improvements.

One of the efforts to get funding has been through the sale of DNN documentation:

However, all of that information can be found in the online help section of the website as well.  I don't use it, but I think it's just as comprehensive.  It just is not as convenient to "thumb" through.
